Busy starting fires

Sorry for my absence lately! I've been busy, busy, busy with preparing for two big weddings coming up this weekend and next weekend.

There have been bachelorette parties and wedding showers, dress fittings, make-up trials, shopping for presents, shoes, and accessories... the list goes on. I have been having SO MUCH FUN!

My favourite day so far has been my best friend's bachelorette party. We went for a luxury pedicure and paraffin wax treatment in the morning and it was soooo relaxing. We sat on a big comfy elevated couch with lots of fluffy pillows and soaked our tired toes in hot soapy water. The estheticians went to work scrubbing our feet and calves with grapefruit exfoiliant scrub, massaging with soothing scented creams, and wrapping them in hot, ultra-relaxing paraffin wax. Wrapped in warm towels, we chat about girly things and giggled over the up-coming wedding. Then the estheticians trimmed our nails, buffed them to a shine, and painted them with our choices of pretty colours. All smooth and prettied up, we shuffed in our slippers and towel robes to the dining area where we enjoyed a scrumptious chicken salad, champagne, and chocolate dipped strawberries. Cheers to the bride-to-be!

After the spa, we headed out to Robson Street for some shopping. My dear bachelorette was dressed to be teased with a large "the bachelorette" sash across her chest and a magic fairy wand. I had also pinned an elaborate tuule and ribbon creation onto her head so that it was hard to miss her irregularity, heheheh... People stopped to stare at her, and other passed by whispering, "bachelorette party". One young girl stopped and asked, "Is it your birthday?" Whereupon, the bachelorette had to answer, "No, it's my bachelorette party" and point to the large sign across her chest.

I had been trying a new brand of lipstick by MAC that is supposed to stay on all day, and we all agreed that it was holding up extremely well through all our meals and drinks that day. We entered the MAC store and one of the sweet ladies there helped us each choose a fitting colour for the wedding. Now with painted lips (and toes), we headed to the theatre for a wedding-themed movie - "Mamma Mia"!

I have to say, Mamma Mia is a great movie for a girl's day out. We laughed so hard! It's incredibly funny and the story is very sweet. Meryl Streep does a wonderful job as the mother of the bride, and Colin Firth has a lovely singing voice. Poor Pierce Brosnan, however, garnered a theatre full of snickering and giggling when he started to sing... and it wasn't a funny part of the movie.

After the movie, we headed to Chambar on Beatty Street for dinner, an almost completely candlelit restaurant. The gentlemen in the table next to us surprised us by buying us our first round of drinks. "This round of drinks is complimentary of the gentlemen over there, " said the waiter, and the guys raised their glasses and cried, "Congratulations!" We were very delighted and raised our glasses in returning saying, "Cheers!" and "Thank you!"

The food (a huge pot of steaming mussels, cherry garnished beef tatataki, and grilled scallops) was delicious and perfect for sharing, and dessert (raspberry sorbet) was tangy and extremely flavourful. Our dessert was followed by present-opening-time and, oops, a fire!

One of the girls noticed that the wrapping paper was dangerously close to the candle on one side of the table and promptly moved it to the other side of the table, forgetting that there was also a candle there. The wrapping paper burst into flames instantly, so she picked up another handful of paper and tried to pat the fire out. Unfortunately, that paper too caught fire and there was suddenly quite a large fire burning on our table top.

The girl beside me jumped to action, grabbed my glass of water and dumped it onto the fire. The guys from the other table ran with their glasses of water and poured that on top. Then the bartender ran over with a large pitcher of water and poured that on top, and the fire was finally put out. Our waiter came over and asked, "Wow, what happened here?" and we collapsed into a fit of laughter and giggling, telling him that we had started a fire. The guys from the other table moved closer after that and joined in for the remainder of our present-opening-time. I guess the fire was good for bonding, lol.

Drawing at Night

I felt the urge to draw last night and whipped up some new bookmarks. I had great fun designing some brown felt owls for my subjects in addition to some mushrooms, birds, and gnome cottages.

I settled down for some painting today and coloured them up.

I am really enjoying coming up with each design, and it feels good to practice painting. There are still some hit and misses with it (one of the mushroom ones didn't turn out the way I wanted it to), but I am very happy with some of the other ones. It seems that less is more, when it comes to watercolour painting.

I am going to keep practicing. Next up are some larger bookmarks.

Shopping Weekend

I had a wonderful day out shopping with V. today. It was sunny out, I wore my comfy heels, and I found everything that I was looking for (and more!). Splendiferous! My favourite purchase was a cute little wristlet purse that I snapped up in a jiffy, and I acquired a tidy new collection of pretty make-up colours. I wish I was more adventurous and I could try painting up my eyes like those runway models. They look out of this world with their crazy bright colours and designs, but it looks so neat! Maybe one halloween, I'll pretend it's part of my costume.

I also got my first look at dresses and bags designed by Betsey Johnson. Oooh, V. had a hard time coaxing me out of that store purchase-free. There were so many pretty dresses and funky bags. I was so tempted!

I was happy to spot a little baby girl sporting a felt ice-cream hair clip that I swear I've seen on Etsy before.

I finally had time today to upload another bookmark to my shop. This one features a felt bird tree, because I love felt birds and I think that a whole tree full of them would be very wonderful indeed!

Kristiana Parn and Green Leaf and Owl

It's been a while since I've done my usual showcase of great Etsy work, so here it is today!

Today, I am featuring work by Kristiana Parn, better known as krisblues on Etsy.

I love the mellow colours that she uses for her backgrounds, and the bright contrasting animals.

I've also been fascinated by the pendant necklaces in Green Leaf and Owl's shop.

Fat Grub Bookmark No.2

It's been super busy at work lately with long 11-hour days. I'm tired, but it feels good to be busy too. I'm also loving the sunny weather.

I had a little extra time last night, so finished up a new Fat Grub bookmark.

It is now up in the shop.

Wedding Shower

I had great fun today attending my friend's wedding shower! There were lots of fun/humiliating games, a silly costume for the bride-to-be, and lots of time to bond with each other and the bride-to-be. A very good time was had by all!

As you can see, I brought a gift adorned with one of my bookmarks. The gift was for a rainy day, so my Rainy Day bookmark seemed to be an appropriate addition. It's very pretty, no?

And, there's the bride's sister putting the seashell bra on. Ah... there's nothing like a sister to really put the final touch on your most embarrassing moments, huh? They know just the right buttons to push, hehehe... But the bride-to-be was a very good sport. What a great gal!

Unloved Monster Bookmark

The Unloved Monster bookmark is now in the shop as well!

Comparison between different eyelets

I've been experimenting with different kinds of eyelets and eyelet brands so I sacrificed one bookmark for the purpose. I used a handy-dandy "Crop-A-Dile Big Bite" to set the eyelets. The photos are below for your own reference. Click on the photo to see a larger image.

Appearance of back
In terms of the appearance of the backing, the Sewing Basket brand eyelets that come in sets of 2 with eyelets and snaps are the best. They are thicker in the end, but there are no scratchy edges - round in the front and round in the back. The one piece Sewing Basket eyelets also work nicely with backing edges that curl neatly in a circle. The worst is the Making Memories one-piece eyelets. They basically look smashed.

Appearance of front
The one piece Sewing Basket brand eyelets have the most narrow edges. The two piece Sewing Basket eyelets have round, slightly thicker edges. The Making Memories brand eyelets are like little donuts, and have the most irregular of shapes after setting. I think they are made from a softer metal than the Sewing Basket brand so they tend to change shape after being pressed with the setter.

Flatness
The Making Memories brand is the flattest of them all (since the backing smashes down flat) and come in many different colours and shapes, so they would be good for scrapbooking since you'll never see the back. The next flattest is the one-piece Sewing Basket brand, and the least flat (but still acceptably flat) is the 2 piece Sewing Basket brand.

Strawberry Bookmark

Here's the first of the finished bookmarks, a sweet little strawberry painting with felt strawberries on the ends of sheer white ribbon. It's now available in the shop!

Bookmarks in Progress

Hello!

I had the urge to draw on the weekend and whipped up these little bookmarks. I still need to add ribbons or some other kind of dangly thing onto the ends of them, but I am happy with how they are turning out so far.

They have been drawn in ink and painted with watercolour. I laminated them to protect the mini paintings from damage.

It's exciting to be drawing and painting again. I found it rather difficult at first though since I haven't done it in a while. I think I will get better at this with practice, but this is not bad for just starting up again.

Hurray!
