Gum Graft Experience Two Weeks Later

Finally, over two weeks have passed! According to those online sites, my gum graft wounds should be pretty nicely healed now.

Let's look back at Day 13!

On day 13, I went in early for my follow-up appointment with my periodontist. I was scared that the gum graft had fallen off, but I was assured that the gum graft was still there. It just looked so much like my original gums in colour that I couldn't tell if it was the new gums or the old gums - not bad!

As you can see from the picture, some of the stitches are still attached. Those fell out about a day or two later.
The periodontist told me that the "bandage" was still attached to the roof of my mouth where the gum graft donor tissue was taken from. I was surprised to hear that I had a bandage up there. I thought it was just the scab. I realize now that those pale coloured edges in the earlier pictures is actually the bandage she painted on.

She told me that there would be nice, new tissue on the roof of my mouth when the bandage fell off.
Sure enough, the bandage fell off today on Day 16! There really is nice, pink new tissue underneath!
This is the highly disgusting yet strangely fascinating bandage that fell off. It's thin like a crust and hard like a shell. Ewwww!
And, ta da, here is the gum graft so far. There are no more stitches and everything is smooth and pink. The graft is slightly lighter in colour, but there are no ugly edges. Everything blends in pretty well.

I am quite satisfied with how this gum graft experience turned out so far.

Best wishes for a good experience for you too if you ever need to get a gum graft!

Take care!

Gum Graft Experience - 11 days later

Okay, so it's 11 days later now. I can eat whatever I want as long as I eat it on the other side of my mouth, and nothing really hurts anymore. I can also open my mouth a little more before I feel pulling on the stitches.
The gum graft area is still gross around the edges, but it's a nice pink colour otherwise. However, I'm not sure if that nice pink colour is my original gums or partially the gum graft. I am still suspicious that maybe the gum graft fell off.

I guess I'll find out when I go in for my check up in about 5 more days. I really, really hope that the gum graft did not fall off because I really don't want to go through this again.
The donor site on the roof of my mouth looks about the same as day 7 or day 8, but there are definitely some lighter areas under the wound.

I hope all is well with you!

Gum Graft Experience - One Week Later

It has been one week since my gum graft and I no longer need to take Tylenol or ice the site. I can eat normal foods on the unaffected side, but I still drink Boost, Ensure, or soup whenever I can.

I wear my retainers all day long, and clean them in the morning and evening when I do my brushing and flossing. I don't mind wearing my retainers, but I do get annoyed at the Periogard mouthwash since it requires two hours of no eating or drinking. That's a long time to wait in the morning before having breakfast. I think it would be smart to eat before brushing for the mornings.
I took a picture of the gum graft site this morning and I'm a little bit puzzled at the pink part in the front. There used to be white donor gums there and now it appears to have fallen off. It looks healthy underneath, but I'm hoping that some of that pink gums is new donor tissue. Otherwise, the gum graft didn't take on that spot, which would suck.

I noticed that the stitches are starting to dissolve. When I was rinsing last night, a bit of the stitches rinsed out. I hope that's okay.

The roof of my mouth is healing nicely. You can see how the edges are lighter coloured as the tissue grows back from the edges towards the center. I suspect the tissue is healing from underneath that site too since the wound is getting slightly lighter coloured.

I saw pictures of gum graft donor sites on the Internet and the donor site looked completely healed in two weeks so this should be the halfway point.

I hope all is well with you!
