"Because nobody loves me" he said.
He closed his hand over the little yellow flower and made a wish. When he opened his eyes and his hand, a little yellow bird now sat there. A dark yellow heart upon it's chest. It hopped up upon his shoulder and trilled a tune.
In the trees sat another little yellow bird, and when it heard Unloved's little bird sing, it perked its head and sang back. Hesitantly, the bird in the tree flew closer, hopeful that it had finally found a friend. It called to Unloved's bird, asking it to come to his tree. But Unloved's bird could not fly, having been made from a flower. It shook its head sadly and could not answer the calling.
Bravely, the bird in the tree flew to Unloved, and landed upon his head. They sang songs to each other and were soon fast friends. They had found their match. Unloved's bird could not fly, but the bird from the tree did not mind. He could fly to Unloved, and he was content with that.
Unloved watched as his flower bird and the tree bird told each other stories of their lives - one as a flower, and one as a bird. He delighted that his flower bird had found a friend and he was comforted by their contentment.
