Crows and Pigeons (Don't) Live Forever

I always find it shocking when I see a dead crow or pigeon. They're such hardy species that I often think of them as being invincible. Unfortunately, Nature saw fit that my misconceptions be corrected... in one day. Today I saw a real dead pigeon and then a real dead crow. The pigeon was smushed on the road, cars passing carelessly over it; the crow lay in the grass by a bush, feathers amuck and one wing raised to the sky. It was as though the crow had cried out to God, "Why me!?! All crows live forever, why am I the unlucky one?"
