A Happy Family Christmas

Christmas was very merry at my house this year. In the morning, my sister baked a fresh batch of festive mini cupcakes.
Unfortunately, they weren't for me to eat. They were a custom order!
She started baking goodies this year for the Baker's Market, and people have been placing orders for pies and treats like these. Aren't they yummy looking!?
Here's a pic of Christmas dinner. My parents outdid themselves this year.
These little cocktail sausages were so yummy. They had little juicy pockets of mozzarella cheese in them!

Here's one of the glass bowls full of chocolates and cookies.
And here is the chocolate fountain. We put a whole box of truffles in there and then lots of cream and milk to get it to the right consistency to flow properly in the fountain. It was a lot of fun! We dipped apple pieces, pineapple pieces, banana slices, cookies, cake, nuts... you get the idea! These are some of the presents I wrapped up this year. I got a lot of good gifts this year too. Santa was good to me. My favourite were some clear Sterilite containers that perfectly hold my fabric stash. Now I can stop worrying about them collecting dust!

I also got a nifty thread spool holder for my growing collection of thread colours.
Check out the new pouches I made today! I figured I'd make some for the shop since I've been neglecting that lately. So, if you've been eyeing some of the pouches, you can now pick your favourite from my shop!

If you have some requests for another specific one, just let me know.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Happy Halloween 2010

A little elephant just came to my door. It didn't say trick or treat. Instead, it spouted some exuberant gibberish at me and waved. It was super adorable :)

A vampire, Scooby Doo, and a bride came by too so far.
I just wanted to show you some pictures from today. This is my pumpkin on my porch right now! Check out his big ears and large eyeballs! Lol!
This is the delicious apple pie that my sister baked from scratch yesterday for the anniversary party of our first year at this new house. It was a good party!
These are the candles my sweetie put inside of the large-eared jack-o-lantern. See his nifty toothpick trick? He tapes the toothpicks onto the candles and then sticks the rocket-like contraption into the base of the pumpkin.
He also rubbed some cinnamon on the lid. When the pumpkin lid starts to burn from the candles (those black marks), it smells something like French Toast or Pumpkin Pie.
These are the pumpkin seeds that my mom plans to toast in the oven. Mmm...! They look kinda of cool too!

Have a happy Halloween!

A Valentines Day Soiree

I hope you all had a wonderful Valentines Day, and a very happy Chinese New Year! Last night, my brother and sister put together a really lovely Valentine's Day dinner, and I wanted to show you some pictures from it.
A friend came over ahead of time and helped to decorate. The table was covered with a heart-themed table cloth, red heart shaped doilies, and red napkins. In the center line were tea lights, a potted orchid, and some origami paper love boats (I'll show you later how to make these). Our glass were filled with sparkling beverages, and they gleamed prettily in the candlelight. It's all very romantic in setting, but it was not for couples only. We wanted to just have a fun time with our friends. The appetizer, Ahi tuna with avocado, was gorgeous. My brother and sister really wowed the guests with how far they went in terms of presentation on this dish.My sister, the culinary genius, baked heart shaped pizzas using her own homemade dough. She even stuffed the crust with cheese. It was super delicious.
Here's a close up. Yum! There was also lasagna besides the pizza.
For dessert, there were glazed strawberry tarts. They were so good!
You could choose between white chocolate or milk chocolate topping.
... and my brother came around with whipped cream to garnish. Of course, mine had a giant mound :)
He also scooped some mini scoops of strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla ice cream for me. So cute!My sister had hers separately in her finished tart tin with a little dollop of whipped cream on top. I swear, every thing is nicer by candle light!
And here is the elaborate version of my Valentine's Day Origami Love Boat. This one went to my sweetie. The ones decorating the tables were just the boat with the heart on top.

I hope you all had a wonderful time with your loved ones and dear friends!

My Happy Christmas

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas! Here are some pictures from mine! This is our tree with all the presents underneath! It has been many years since we have had a Christmas tree. In my old house, there was no room to store one so we had given ours away a long time ago. This year there is PLENTY of room! Hurray! I love it!
I gave one Origami Wreath to each of my family members. This one is mine. I like the multi-coloured ones best, but each of them chose a different colour that I didn't expect. My dad, for instance, chose one made from different shades of red only!

I sell these in my store.
One of our Christmas traditions is to see who can build the tallest present tower with their gifts. It's always a good laugh to see who can get the most creative in stacking to achieve taller results. Here is Peanut (a LEFTZ by ArtTales) sitting with my finished tower. It's not the tallest one by far, but I got extra points for having the most artistic tower.

My brother almost won the tallest present tower contest, but my dad spotted my card tower-like construction and followed suit to create a really, really tall tower that beat my brother out. Dad got a kick out of that :) Unfortunately, that tower didn't last very long. It fell over with a spectacular crash which was quite amusing because my Dad tried to juggle as many presents as he could before they hit the ground. Ah, the comedy never ends in my house.
Here's a cute little Christmas hedgehog on the mantelpiece. I think he's from Purdy's or Brussels Chocolates.

What are some of your family Christmas traditions? I'd love to hear about them!

I hope you have a very Happy New Year!

Love,
Marie

Merry Christmas Dear Readers

Dear Sweet Readers,

Thank you for a wonderful 2009! You have been a blessing to me. I have looked forward eagerly to writing new tutorials to share with you, and in showing you all the fun things I have been up to and making. Your comments and emails have cheered me, encouraged me, and warmed my heart.

This year has been challenging for me - I was laid off from my job, I moved to a new house for the first time in my life, and I've done a lot of soul searching. In the process, I learned a lot about myself, my family, and what was the most important to me.

I have learned that art is crucial to my existence. I am an artist at heart, and any attempts to deny this or bury it are damaging to my well-being. Rather, the deeper that I delve into my arts and crafts, the happier I become and the more whole I feel.

I have learned that my family loves me. They are quirky, have a manifold of flaws, and they are difficult to live with at times. Even so, I have really enjoyed all the time off I have had to move with them and experience life with them. When everyone goes to work, I am left at home with my mother. We have cleaned the house together, and we have spent hours talking over what I should do next and how I feel. She has also told me stories from her life so that I can learn from them, and benefit from her experiences. She is a good mother, and she is a good listener. I feel blessed to have this time to spend with her.

When I was working, I was always too busy to spend time with my family. We grew apart. Now we are growing close again and I am surprised to find that I am happy with this. While I feel like a bum for not having a job, they are wholly supportive of my journey to find a job that I love and feel happy with.

I still have a long way to go, and perhaps this will be a life-long journey, to find what it is that I am made for and designed to do. I think there is purpose for everyone, but I don't know what mine is yet. Time passes by quickly. Months feel like a weekend to me. I often anticipate that Monday that will never come when I will pack my bags and head to the cubicle that I occupied for four and a half years.

Where will I go next? Where will my new "cubicle" be? I have no idea, but I know that 2010 will bring changes to my life that I had never expected. Life changes whether you want it to or not. We have to be ready for it.

I hope that 2010 will be a year of good health, safety, and happiness for you. I hope that you will love your job. If you don't love your job, I hope you will take the steps to change your situation. Don't wait for change to sneak up on you and to catch you by surprise.

I hope that you will find people in your life to love and care for you. I think it's too easy to think that no one loves you. Sometimes, you're the one that's been building the walls and breaking the bonds. Take the time out to spend time with them and to grow some roots. Love blossoms, but it needs help to grow.

I hope that 2010 will bring you good health naturally, but also good health that you gained for yourself. Go on that walk that you need, take that break, and eat better foods. Drink lots of water, and learn to take better care of yourself. You are valuable, lovable, and worthy of a better life.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you!

May God bless you and your families.

Love,
Marie

Happy Birthday To Dad

Today is my dad's birthday! He was really excited about getting a year older and was getting ready for it yesterday :) I love how he's such a kid sometimes. It really adds a lot of enthusiasm to life. This is the card I whipped up for him today. I used one of my newest ACEOs. This design is very versatile. It comes in rainbow colours, Christmas colours, orange tones, and red tones. I picked the orange one since it's cheerful and he likes orange/gold tones.
Inside are lots of present boxes. I figure my family can add doodles or little messages inside of them when they sign the card.

I hope he has a fantastic birthday. Yay for another happy, healthy year of life!

Two Love Birds And Three Little Tweeters

In spending more time with my parents, I can now envision them as the two love birds that once built a nest and had little birdlings to feed inside. When I go to the supermarket, they twitter about looking for various contraptions to improve the function of their nest, and they bicker and delight over what to bring home to feed their birdlings.

I find it fascinating to think that this is how they made my previous house a home for three little children - three little well-fed children! I don't crave junk food as much as my counterparts today because there was never a shortage of tasty treats to eat in the house. My dad made sure of that!

In moving to a new house, my parents have been taxed to the maximum. They are not as young as they were when they first built their nest for three little ones, and yet they try very hard to rebuild it now. My sister mentioned that she felt that moving had aged them significantly, and she felt worried about that. I worry too.

In some ways, I am truly thankful that I was laid off at such perfect timing. I have had ample time at home with my mother to help her unpack, clean, and organize the new house. If I wasn't home every day like this, she would be attempting all this work alone! I can't imagine that because all this cleaning tires me out completely, and I'm just a young 'un.
I think it would be terribly lonesome alone in a new house too. We came from a tiny townhouse and this place is enormous in comparison. I'm glad that I'm here to keep her company (and that she's here to keep ME company!)

For my parent's recent anniversary, I decided to put one of my Putting Down Roots ACEOs to use. They reminded me so much of the birds that started off at the Putting Down Roots No.3 stage that it seemed too perfect to miss out on. Here they are with their golden nest and one little, fuzzy birdling. Ah, the beginnings of what would be a happy family of five!
And inside are the 3 grown up tweeters with all their distinguishing traits. I'm the short, fat one with long hair, my brother is skinny and tall with short hair, and my sister is tall, slim, and wavy/curly haired. I made speech bubbles for each of us so that we could write our anniversary well wishes.

This was a fun project for me :) My parents liked the card and found the grown up tweeters amusing. They asked why they have another fuzzy baby bird on the front of the card. My sister said it was a grandchild :P

Have a happy day!

Whirlwind Move To A NEW HOME

Sorry for any delays in emails and postings! I've been moving to a new house! Phewf! Has it ever been taxing.

I don't actually have Internet set up yet, so I'm sneaking in a quick post during a break in class :)

The new house is great! It's red and white, just like my old place, and it's on a hill, just like my old place. The only difference is that it's a house instead of a townhouse. Otherwise, I'd have to do a double take! Heheheh... There's a really big gardening area though, so I'll have fun showing you what I do with that later on!

Right now, we're focused on unpacking and cleaning. We don't even have a couch yet! The house is really hollow and you can hear an echo when you talk. I think that will change once the carpeting and furniture get put in. It's a pretty nice place, and my mother seemingly loves it. I'm getting used to it too, but it was hard for the first two days. I really missed my old place because I had grown up there and my room was my hideout. At night, I felt like a hermit crab that had been forcefully removed from its shell and I would leave a little light on because it was frightening to be in a new home.

I don't have any pictures here at school to post, but I'll add some later on for you to see. I'm the first one in my family to have their room all set up, partly because I was so hell-bent on making it feel like home again. The rest of them are still sleeping on mattresses on the floor while my room, well, it looks like my room again already, and it's been scrubbed from ceiling to baseboards.

Anyways, I have to get back to class. I have a giveaway to do this week, but you'll have to stay posted for that to happen starting on Tuesday or Wednesday instead when my Internet gets set up again. I apologize sincerely for that, especially to asliceofdelight, but I want to do it right instead of pell-mell right now.

I wish you all sweet dreams, and happy home-making. I'll be wishing the same for myself :P

A Day At The Fair And Soccer Pitch

In addition to meeting up with old friends, I have been eating good food and hanging out with my awesome cousin from out of town. Here are some pics:
This is the yummy pulled pork sandwich I had at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). It was affordably priced for fair food, and quite filling! Mmmmm! My sweetie brought me a cherry margarita with an umbrella. He knows I like those umbrellas.
Yes, and then I ate this hen and her chicks... alive. No, no, just kidding! These cuties were hanging out in the barn area. I found them too irresistable to not photograph. Ah, I love animal babies.

I did eat a half chicken roasting on an open charcoal pit though. They have that at the fair every year and it's soooooo goooood! That chicken is totally overpriced, but it's a tradition. (And traditions must be obeyed when they smell so good!).
Later on that night, we went to a soccer game. I was trying to snap a picture of the pitch when the mascot noticed the camera-happy fans around me, and began to strike sexy poses for us. It was very amusing.I like the way the soccer pitch looks when it's partially lit by artificial light and twilight. It's nice.

So here I am back at square one in the job arena, but advancing quickly in the living life section. The anxiety of not having a job anymore is catching up, I'll admit. I don't really know what to do with myself regarding that. However, I am valuing the opportunity I have to take a breather and catch up with all the friends and life experiences that I've been missing out on.

I hope you have a good day!

Relaxing On Local Waters - Kayaking At Belcarra Park

If you're looking for some relaxing time in the sun, surrounded by cold, salty waters and abundant aquatic wildlife, then look no further than your local kayaking destination. For me, that was at Belcarra Park in Anmore.

My cousin was in town with his favourite squeeze, and my brother suggested this surprisingly fun and relaxing activity. I'm not much of a sports person myself. I'm clutzy and prone to disaster, but when you choose a double kayak, the person in the back (my brother) is steering using foot pedals. Since he's already paddling away, I just have to pretend to paddle (and take lots of pictures).

I would highly recommend this water sport even for the non-sports person. Once you're out in the water, it's so refreshing! The water is icy cold and feels great on your skin when you stick your hand into the water, while the sun was bright and warms you up. Because of the high salt content of the water, salt crystals actually formed on my arm when the sun dried up the water. I found that kind of neat. I guess this is how people easily collected salt in the olden days (but probably not on their arm.)
We ducked under docks from private homes around the water's edge and discovered brightly coloured starfish clinging to the rocky, barnacle-covered ledges. They looked so beautiful! I touched one that was above the water and it was rough and sort of spiky, but not dangerously so. I found that surprising since they look like soft sponges in the water. They attach to surfaces with tiny, translucent sucker feet.
Seals bobbed their heads out of the water to inspect our kayaks from a distance. It was very exciting to have them so near, until we discovered one lounging on a rock that we happened to pass right by! It was so lazy that it simply waved one flipper at us, as if to bat away an annoying fly, and resumed napping. Our original plan of a two hour kayak soon extended to a happy four hours. Jellyfish in white and deep red floated past, and we stopped at a secluded beach that seemed accessible only by water.
It was nice to be out on the water, away from the worries of every day life. I hope you'll have the chance to enjoy it while the weather is still lazy and good.

Have a great day!
