Finding Inspiration - The Resources You Need To Succeed

In exploring what I want to do next in my career life, I took a course called Career Builder Plus at Douglas College. It was a ten day program, and it focused on finding out what it was exactly that inspired each of us, motivated us, and gave our lives meaning. If we could discover this very crucial information, we could find direction to pursue the career of our dreams. We were tired of jobs we didn't like, didn't love, or simply didn't care about.

In the duration of that program, I was introduced to the inspirational speaker, Les Brown. I found that he really did have the power to motivate me and give me some hope for finding the right job for me. I vowed to watch more inspirational talks when I felt down and out, simply as pick-me-uppers when things got stale. However, I soon lost sight of this until today when my friend sent me a link to a marvelous site called TED.com. TED is a nonprofit organization committed to spreading the best ideas in the world for free. There are videos galore and you can learn so much, that's it's really quite unbelievable. In particular today, I watched a talk by Seth Godin on standing out, and a talk by Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation. If you're remotely interested in business (you run an Etsy shop, manage people, etc), you should check these out. Seth Godin talks about how marketing has changed. It has gone from bombarding people with information until they buy your product to standing out so that they will pay attention to you and spread the word on your behalf. Dan Pink talks about how some companies suffocate innovation and creativity by using extrinsic motivation instead of intrinsic motivation.
Seth Godin also has another talk on "the tribes we lead". Something that stood out for me in that talk was his observation that people want to be missed. They want to know that they will be missed when they are gone, and that our jobs as tribe leaders (companies, managers, etc) is to make sure that our customers and employees feel missed when they are gone. In other words, people want to feel like they belong and that they have value. If you can make your customers and contacts feel like they are missed and valued, then you will touch a chord with them and be able to reach them.

In finding inspiration to succeed, it has been important for me to look first inward to learn more about myself, and then to look outwards to find inspiration in the world around me. It appears that there are websites out there like TED.com that want to help you to succeed. Did you know that there are even more? In your local community, for example, is a library where you can read the latest books and magazines for free! There is a wealth of information there. And if you lose your job, you can go to the employment centers and find a case manager that can help you find free resources to job search, career search, and possibly get funding for education. In fact, some courses funded by the government will actually pay you a wage while you take the courses for free. Entrepreneurial courses, for example, apply to this.
You are not alone. There are people that want to help you, and to listen to you. They care about you even though they don't know who you are. They care because they're human too, and they go through the same things as you do. Problems, issues, lay offs, divorces, insecurities, stress, anxiety, loss - they go through them too!

So don't be down on yourself. Yes, the economy is bad and things are hard, but you have the ability to learn, to improve, and to change your situation. And, if you need a motivational kick, here it is:

Carbonmade is Cool!

As you know, I've been snooping around on the web hoping to find the next best tool for showcasing my artwork online. I tried a photo widget from goodwidgets.com, and I liked how nice it looked and how easy it was to add to my website. Unfortunately, it was pretty slow to load. At one recent job interview, the interviewer commented that he had gone to my website portfolio, but that some links were broken. I know for a fact that no links are actually broken, so I guess the widget was so slow to load that he assumed it was busted. Arrggh! That is absolutely no good.

Tara from KMT Graphic Design suggested that I try CarbonMade.com I finally had the chance to check it out today, and I was really impressed with how easy it is to make your very own art portfolio with their application. I opted for the free option since I'm just trying it out now. It gives you 5 projects and 35 images. If you opt for the paying plan, it's $12 per month for 50 projects, 500 images, and 10 videos.

You can check out my new art porfolio made with Carbonmade here:Let me know what you think of it!

Cheers!

The Prettiest Blogs On The Web

In my search to improve my own blog, I've come across some really nice looking blogs by other people.

Here are some of my recent favourites, and why I like them.

http://www.chicchickmedia.com/
I like the dark print on the background contrasted with an easy-on-the-eye muslin and the curly design around the name. I also like the links under the banner. It's a well-put-together site, and a clever idea.

http://www.eightcrazy.blogspot.com/
This gal designed many of my favourite blog designs. She's very talented, huh? Check out her cool links which are BESIDE her banner. How did she do that? Each of her postings also has a little red bubble and arrow design- also blog-voodoo-magic!

http://monkeysmomma.blogspot.com/
I came across this blog today and I love the adorable monkey drawing and the matching monkeys on the background. Pretty cute, huh?

http://www.angiescircus.blogspot.com/
The green on this blog is easy on the eyes and she uses bows, fabric, and tags like on scrapbooks as titles to her different widgets. I like it.

http://www.debbiehodge.typepad.com/
This blog design is simple, but I like it. It is clean and I like the colour scheme. I also like the upside-down scalloping under her banner.

http://www.skiptomylou.org/
Skip to my Lou has more of a commercial site feel to it, but I love her banner image and I like the red links banner under it. I also like the stripes under her side banner links. Altogether very well-coordinated.

http://bakerella.blogspot.com/
Bakerella has a fairly simple blog design, but I love the pale pink colour against the white, and it really shows off her vividly coloured, delicious baked good images (which are always really big just in case your mouth isn't watering yet). I like the scalloped edging under her banner, which really goes with the bakery theme.

http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/
Casey's blog is perfectly themed for her frequent topics on sewing and fashion. I love how it is decorated with buttons and paper cut-outs, and how things are offset and "taped" to the page. It just looks really creative, and her blog is full of inspiration. I also like the link list at the top, and her blue and red theme.

Wordle is FUN!

If you go to wordle.net and type in a link address, they will use words from your site to build an image, or word cloud. Aren't the results, lovely? The first one is from this blog. The second one is from my store!

Valentine's Day Ideas

Looking for some ideas on what to do for V.Day? Here are some fabulous finds from some blogs I've been reading!

This first one is from Bakerella. She has a tutorial on how to make a box of chocolates where the entire box is edible! How amazing is that?
Unfortunately for me, it's TOO amazing. I could never bake a marvelous piece of art like that. I must strive for the cheater's method.
If baking or heart-shaped cookie cutters are not your thing, then there's always my origami heart tutorial. It's perfect for tucking a sweet little note into! All you need is some red paper!
The Black Apple has some printable cutie-pie valentine cards available. Just head over to her site for the PDF link.
You can make a lego cupcake, for the lego lover in your life. I know a few lego aficionados myself...
How about some M&Ms with you and your sweetie on them? You'll need to plan this ahead of time for next year, probably, but now you know where to find 'em!
I'll add more ideas as we get closer to "the big day".

Have a wonderful day!
Marie

Add a Third Column to Blogger

Hey! I figured out how to add a third column to Blogger!

If you want one too, go here! I'm just playing around with it now using the Minima Blogger template, but I'll try some other templates next. It takes some getting used to how to add the code, but that tutorial is quite good.

There are also tutorials for other blogger templates here.

Give it a try!

Happy Friday

Hello! I hope you are having a great Friday (last day of the week! Yeah~!)

My sweetie took me out for a surprise yesterday. I was cautious as to what to expect, but guess where he took me? To the Circle Craft Christmas Fair! Talk about a guy that really knows me, lol. I saw so many great artists there.

My favourites were a shop that sold soft rag dolls made from organic cotton for babies, a shop that sold funny-looking stuffed monsters with giant soft hearts sewn to their chests and skinny limbs (but the seller was no where to be seen so I couldn't buy one!), a fellow that sold clay friendly-looking gnomes surrounded with real, fluffy moss (I asked him how he got into this business and he chuckled and said, "I guess the gnomes just took over!", and a beautiful shop full of lampwork glass beads of the most wonderful, drool-worthy variety. It was a very fun experience.

To celebrate the end to a good week, here's a funny link for you. It's about a man that tries to submit a drawing of a spider to pay off his bill. Read the whole thing. It's hilarious :)

The Outbreak - Movie Game

I played this online zombie movie game with a co-worker and we tried out every possible choice and outcome. It was pretty fun. It's like Choose Your Own Adventure books, but in movie form.

Check it out!

Betz White and Emily Martin

I'm a big fan of Etsy crafters. Two of my favourite are Betz White and Emily Martin. Today I came across some videos of them on the Martha Stewart show and I just had to share. You'll have to bear with a lot of commercials about Ducolax, a stool softerner (lol), but it's great to see these two gals live on television.

Emily Martin on a podcast

I'm a big fan of Emily Martin of the Black Apple. I love reading her blog posts daily and checking up on what's new in her shop. For the most part, I'm fascinated by the idea of working as an artisan full time and being able to make a living from doing what you love. It's like a fairy tale come true. Today she has a link to a podcast where she talks about how her blog works to keep her customers in touch with her and how it inadvertently drives more customers to buy her products. She describes it as being a very unusual outcome to her desire to keep in touch with her friends, family and customer base. Worth a listen, if you're interested in how blogs can help drive a small business.

Check out this great commercial with Michael Bay for Verizon. It's awesome.
